“Oh! My! God!”
“I Don`t Belieeeve It!”

What was the last thing I said in last month`s blog?

“What could possibly go wrong?!”

Let`s have a little re-cap, shall we? :

  • Completed HND – check
  • Application for final year of degree course – check
  • Cash available to pay for said final year course – check(ish!)
  • Time available to study for said final year degree course – (ongoing project)

I haven`t missed anything – have I??! All bases covered? What could possibly go wrong?

I have just discovered…..and I can`t believe I`m about to put this in black and white…..I am 6 weeks pregnant!!!! What could possibly go wrong??? Here`s your answer! The one and only thing I didn`t plan for!

Fortunately, RDI are very flexible when it comes to these “unforeseen” circumstances (“unforeseen” - who am I kidding? I know how these things work, I have already had two! ) and I can take up to 3 years to complete my final year, so although that means I will be finishing later than I would have hoped, it certainly helps to take the pressure off!

So for the moment, the grand plan is to continue as planned from the end of April and try to get half the course under my belt (if there`s any room left there!) before baby no.3 puts in an appearance sometime this November.

The second half of the course I may have to defer until the baby (and actually the older two as well!) is sleeping through the night (which based on previous experience may be around 2023 but I will just have to hope this one manages within the 3 year window!).

In the 4th module, I need to complete a 24 hour assessment. This is likely to be pretty unhealthy for me at the best of times – I`m sure I will be typing feverishly without a break for the whole day and night in my usual obsessive-compulsive style – but at what will be roughly 35 weeks pregnant, it probably really isn`t a very good idea – hence waiting until things settle down a little to do modules 4 thru 6. In any case, I am sure that true to form this little one will, like his big brother and sister, be up every hour of the night so on the bright side I can consider it good training for that 24 hour assessment!

Another slight concern I have is studying through the early weeks of pregnancy. Given that the last two times I could have thrown up for Great Britain on the Olympic barfing team, I don`t know how I am going to get on with concentrating during that period. It`s just not so easy to read textbooks with one`s head in a toilet. And even if this time I don`t get so sick, there is always the little matter of the time early in my last pregnancy that I lost my mobile for 3 days only to have it materialise in the fridge soon after I discovered a margarine tub in my handbag. Yes, my confidence in my ability to focus on Business Strategy and Emerging Themes is fading fast.

But – you never know, by sheer chance I may wind up with a case study in Strategy based on the maternity industry, Emerging Business Themes may incorporate a section on high heels for mums-to-be (a personal specialty of mine) and Managing Oneself and Others – OK, well, I think I`ve pretty much already shot myself in the foot on that one!

I will “ganbatte” (do my best) as we say in Japan (when we really don`t know what else to say). If you are considering whether to sign up for a course or not, and whether you will be able to manage the time – quite honestly – if I can manage this anyone can!
