Paul Smith

Name: Paul Smith
Course: MBA
University of Wales

"I work full time as an IT and Communications Manager at a company called G3 systems Ltd.

My MBA has definitely helped at work. Being in a technical role means that I am almost separate from other parts of the business yet I deal with each of them on a daily basis. I am involved from the top to the bottom, and studying my MBA means that I can understand the role they play in the business and relate to them better.

I studied my HNC in Computing at Bournemouth University when I was 25 so I was familiar with higher education, although it took me some time to get used to study at Masters level as I didn’t have a degree.

My advice to you

I would say that the most important thing to bear in mind is that when you start your Masters or MBA that you are not at masters level when you start, but you definitely are by the end. You shouldn’t look at the MBA and think “I cant do that” or “I don’t know anything about that subject” – that’s why you’re doing it – to learn about it! The tutors are there to help from the beginning and mould you into a good student! They taught me the best writing style and best ways to assimilate information.

I have learnt a lot about myself and how I learn best, also the reading and writing style that I prefer. I would also say that I’m actually really interested in my dissertation

A light at the end of the tunnel...

I am just completing my dissertation at the moment, and my MBA in total has taken me 2 and a half years. I haven’t taken any breaks from my studies, so when I finish it will be a huge relief and I can relax! My MBA will give me personal satisfaction and self worth, and it’s something that nobody can take away from me.

I’ve earned it through lots of hard work!"
